Hidden Passages of Paris

When you imagine Paris, you probably imagine love and the Eiffel Tower.

You probably don't imagine the hidden gems of Paris like the covered passages. They are a must-see the next time you visit Paris.

covered passage, Paris, France, travel Europe
Passage des Deux Pavillons

These passages were built in the 18th and 19th centuries to keep people dry while shopping. If you didn't know, it rains a lot in Paris in the winter. The winters in Paris are usually grey and rainy which is why springtime is so celebrated in Paris ! So if you're visiting Paris in winter be sure to know where these passages are located so you can stay dry while you shop.

The covered passages were also the place to be with all of their grandeur and decadence. They were (and those that survive still are) lined with boutiques and protected with a covered roof.

Many of these covered passages were destroyed during the Haussmann era when the grand boulevards in Paris were created.

Passage des Jouffroy

Now, less than 30 remain. Some, like the Passage Jouffroy, include hotels. So if you want to stay in a covered passage, you can !

Make sure to discover some of these hidden passages the next time you're in Paris ! They really are a hidden treasure. Some are clearly marked, some are not so you have to know where to look.
